There’s something strangely satisfying about riding from one side of a country to another, even if it is a relatively small country! The Coast to Coast route between Whitehaven in Cumbria to Tynemouth has been a firm Skedaddle favourite for many years.

Dip your rear wheel in the Irish Sea and allow the network of quiet country lanes to lead you through the varied and beautiful landscapes of Northern England, taking in the wide open spaces of the Lake District, Cumbria and the North Pennines along the way. This popular and clearly signed National Cycle Network route is not without its challenges, taking in Hartside Pass, where, at a respectable 1903ft above sea level you can stop for a coffee at Britain’s highest cafe and, on a clear day, admire spectacular views across the Lake District, the Solway Firth and into Southern Scotland. The long descent into Alston which follows has to be one of the highlights of the ride.

Soon you’ll be arriving in Tyneside; passing the fabulous Millennium bridge on the approach to the North Sea at Tynemouth where it is customary to celebrate your achievement by dipping the front wheel.
