Every year UCI America organises a series of stage races throughout Latin America. For the last 20 years, Brazil’s “Tour De Santa Catarina” has been one of the highlights of the season.

South of São Paulo, Santa Catarina is Brazil’s second most southerly state. Our tour begins on Ilha de Santa Catarina, in the capital of Florianópolis. We will begin with a gentle warm up ride on the island before transferring to Termas da Guarda on the mainland where will begin sampling the highlights of the actual race route.

Our first and toughest challenge comes the next day as we ride to Bom Jardim via the notorious Serra do Rio Rastro. This is one of Brazil’s toughest climbs and one of the reasons why the Tour de Santa Catarina has its reputation. As always our support vehicle will be on hand offering an optional lift up and over the toughest sections. The following day is more rolling as we head for the town of Urubici. It’s onwards and generally downwards from here to Santo Amaro da Imperatriz which will be our home for the next couple of nights. On our second day here we will ride into the nearby Serra do Tabuleiro National Park,a protected area of outstanding natural beauty.

From Santo Amaro we begin our return ride to Florianópolis where one final island ride completes the Santa Catarina leg of our tour. Packing up the bikes, but only for one day, we fly to Rio de Janeiro, arriving in the city in time to hit the Copacabana. It’s an early start the following morning as we embark on our final challenge; the hairpinned ascent of Rio’s Corcovado to see the world-famous Cristo Redentor.

It’s a dramatic finale and all that remains is a careful descent back to the foot of the mountain from where we will transfer safely through the city traffic to our hotel. Time for a last visit to the beach before return flights the following morning
